San Anselmo nació en Aosta (Italia) en 1033 de noble familia. Desde muy niño se sintió inclinado hacia la vida contemplativa. Pero su padre, Gandulfo, se opuso: no podía ver a su primogénito hecho un monje; anhelaba que siguiera sus huellas.
